Jean Pederson Workshop

           SEDUCTIVE SURFACES

                       Painting in Portugal

                                                 with JEAN PEDERSON

Workshop dates:            24th September – 2nd October

(with the option to stay longer)

The vibrant twinkling city of Porto…Porto is quite hilly but taxis are cheap, the on/off buses are great and there are even tuktuks (rickshaws)!

A wonderful 8-day workshop with five full days in the Pink Buddha Studio near Porto, Portugal with the celebrated artist Jean Pederson, combined with three full days of outings to soak up both the history and lovely scenery of this safe, fascinating country where you receive a warm welcome. There will be many opportunities to sketch, journal and take photos to use as inspiration for your painting, both in the workshop and for many months to come!

(Please see the end of the page for Jean’s biography and wide artistic and teaching experience)

Jane paints expressive portraits on vibrant texture-filled backgrounds

Jean describes the workshop in her own words:-

Seductive Surfaces

As painters we work on two-dimensional surfaces to communicate our ideas. The choices in the supports, medias and techniques are endless and their exploration is a seductive process!

Create texture and add depth to your paintings in this experimental workshop with Jean Pederson.

Using a variety of acrylic mediums you will learn to build up interesting surfaces and intriguing grounds that can be used within your paintings or as a base for finished work.

We will explore techniques to achieve a variety of effects, including layering, texturizing, glazing, and more, and then use these ideas to develop finished pieces.

Feel free to work on paper, canvas or wood – any surface you’re comfortable working on (or would like to try). You may want to take your artwork home so size and weight may influence your choices.

The Pink Buddha Art Studio

Portugal is the land of tiles!

The studio is owned and run by Linda Chaves, a UK ex-pat who has lived in this area of Portugal for many years. A teacher all her life, and now an artist and teacher, Linda opened the studio in 2015 to offer both her own teaching programmes and retreats to students, and residencies to established artists, and also to invite her pick of her favourite artists to come and give their own workshops and retreats. “My aim is to provide a large, spacious studio area where people will be inspired by this unique corner of the world. I try to supply as many of the heavier materials as possible, to lighten your load, and to generate a great atmosphere where learning and exploring are balanced by fun, friendship and joy.” Linda knows all the interesting places to go, not found in the tourist guides, indeed way off the tourist track, and loves sharing all her secrets about this area, known as the ‘Green Coast’. You will find the local people warm, kind, hospitable and delightful – eager to help and to please.

There is a lovely view over the valley of the River Sousa with farmlands and villages, from Linda’s house above the studio

Stay at Linda’s house (Casa Linda) or book in at the nearby Lousada Country Hotel (all details later) – enjoy not just the studio, but the huge sun terrace, the pool and the garden full of fruit trees such as lemons, oranges, figs, quinces and plums!

To add to our sensual experiences, we hope to arrange a Portuguese Cookery Evening for our last evening together; a demonstration, by Portuguese friends, of a typical meal, which we will then tuck into, enjoying their company, and a unique chance to meet and chat with local people. This has been the highlight of all the Pink Buddha workshops so far!

Please click along the tabs at the top of the page to find out much more about the studio and the area.

Programme

22nd to 24th September: Arrival and settling in time – get acclimatised and maybe sample the local wine by the pool!

24th September: In the studio with Jean

25th September:  Outing to the vibrant, twinkling yet historic city of Porto (return train ticket included in price) for a day of discovery, sketching and adventure.

The interior of the Lello Bookshop

This is a chance to visit the magical LELLO bookshop, on the top ten lists of the best bookshops in the world (placing third in lists by the Lonely Planet and The Guardian), the famous Cafe Majestic (unbelievably also on the top ten list of the best cafes in the world!) the port wine cellars and the historic riverside area and the newly renovated Rua de Flores, now bustling with cafes and shops!

Vibrant Porto – now  voted European City of the Year 2017
Was it at this table that Harry Potter was ‘conceived’?

There are also a couple of amazing art stores, as well as the tiled churches, restored Bolhao market…and much, much more!!! If you are a fan of JK Rowling, it might interest you that she lived in Porto for some considerable time, taught English at a school where I had previously taught, and walked these streets just as lovingly as I still do to this day! It is said that she had the idea for Harry Potter while sitting in the Cafe Majestic (In Rua Santa Catarina, one of the main shopping streets)

26th September: In the studio with Jean

Houses in the old squares of Guimaraes

27th September: A day out to Guimaraes, a beautiful small city only 30 minutes away, easy to stroll around,  with lovingly preserved historic architecture and lovely shops to explore on the Caminho de Santiago, and later time to visit some of the recently preserved ‘Romanesque Sites” in this green, flower-filled area. Sketchbooks and cameras a must!

28th September: In the studio with Jean

29th September:

Each tiled panel shows the traditions of port wine in the valley, the grape harvest and the people

A stunning trip over the mountains to the World Heritage site of the Douro River Valley, where the port wine grapes are grown, with unique scenery, history and climate. Trip will include, depending on the weather and time, some or all of the following: visit to a local museum of port wine in Regua, trip to a local beauty spot with a panoramic view, with choice of a picnic lunch or lunch in a typical restaurant (neither included, lunch in the restaurant about 10 euros per person) , a visit to a quinta (port wine estate) with a tour and tasting, a quick look at the amazing tiled station at Pinhao, and if time, back up the hills to a remote yet charming village which has the best gift shop in Portugal, an array of locally produced gifts and handicrafts at very reasonable prices.

The Douro Valley

NB: There is a port wine tasting session available after the tour, but it is your choice whether you would like to experience the port wine tasting (about half an hour maximum), or join Linda outside where there will be opportunities to sketch or photograph the stunning outlook and the River Douro, stroll by the vines, and there is even a bird walk available for anyone interested.

30th September: In the studio with Jean

1st October: Final studio time with Jean,  and time to relax and lie by the pool before our Portuguese Cookery Evening which will be our goodbye event. ( this is not a vegetarian/vegan friendly meal, as this way of eating is still not widely found in rural Portugal, this is optional). There are also self-catering facilities in the upstairs accommodation. (Please note that you will be asked to make a small contribution to the food, and for chef Teresa’s time and work)

2nd October: The sad day when you are asked to leave by 12 noon. Please see below for information on how to extend your stay.

Accommodation

Please see ‘Length of Stay’ below for our recommendations on the dates and length of your stay.

Lousada Country Hotel

Jean will be staying in one of the bedrooms in the accommodation above the studio at Linda’s house with her husband, please click on the pink to see more about the house – Casa Linda – there are also  two more bedrooms available, one with a double bed and one with two singles –  these will probably be booked very quickly, so best not to wait too long. Please let Linda know if you are interested in sharing the twin-bedded room.

If Casa Linda is booked, I thoroughly recommend the Lousada Country Hotel, which is listed on all the main sites. You will be transported to the studio in the morning and again back in the evening. The hotel is just over a mile from the studio – there are other hotels and b and bs in the wider vicinity, but you would need to arrange transport to and from the studio, unless you are staying within a mile or two. You can contact the hotel directly to book, or use one of the main booking sites online. For legal reasons, I regret I am not able to undertake the hotel booking on your behalf.
Please note that the cost of the workshop is reduced if you are staying in hotel accommodation.

Other Information

To find out more about the Pink Buddha Art studio, please click here to learn more about the studio, here to learn more about the house and here to learn about the locality.

Linda relaxing in the ‘quiet corner’ of the studio

Please note that, aside from a couple of very reasonable lunches out, evening meals (though the apartment is self-catering and you are welcome to use Linda’s small kitchen downstairs for self-catering if you are at the hotel) and souvenirs, there will be very little extra expense. Food and wine are very reasonable indeed, and you will be amazed at the incredible wine available at VERY low prices. It is also cheap to eat out, especially at lunchtime, and in the evening in Lousada there is a choice ranging from several local pizzerias up to slightly more expensive quality restaurants. It is a 15 minute walk from the hotel into Lousada, and I recommend that you club together for a taxi (also very reasonable) or ask the hotel for bicycles!

Jean and I are very happy to answer your questions (linda.janet.chaves@gmail.com) – just ask us anything about the trip at all, the programme, outings, accommodation etc and we will be more than happy to reply. Linda will open a private Facebook group for everyone in a short while, where you can also ask questions and get to know us all.

Travel – I recommend that you book flights through to PORTO airport (OPO) where you will be met and taken to the hotel or to the Pink Buddha. There are train links to Lisbon from Porto city centre, about half hour by train or car from Lousada. please click here for much more information on travel

Length of Stay

The actual workshop consists of five full days of studio activities led by Jean, and at least three full wonderful days spent exploring both city and countryside in this little known but fascinating corner of the world. If you are staying at Linda’s house, you are welcome to arrive on the 22nd or 23rd September at no extra cost to give time to acclimatise, get settled, learn a little about the area and have a dip in the pool. Guests at Linda’s house are asked to leave by 12 noon on the 2nd October unless you have booked to stay longer.

There will be time to relax in the pool, too!

If you are staying at the local Lousada Country Hotel, then I recommend again that you arrive early to acclimatise, and book dates accordingly. Please let me know BEFORE making the hotel or house booking if you wouldn’t mind sharing a room, either here at Casa Linda, or at the hotel, then I can perhaps put you in touch with another person who is interested.

The Pink Buddha accommodation above the studi

If you wish to arrive earlier, or stay on after these dates, then please see if rooms are available at Linda’s house to book extra nights for $45 a night per person. Accommodation is also available at Linda’s house from 18th September 2017 and, after the workshop, to a date of your choice.

(Please note that if you wish to see more of the area before or after the workshop, Linda offers tours and outings here (with discounts for more than one person). Otherwise, though there is a train service to Porto, you would definitely need to hire a car to get about if you are staying longer. I include one airport pick up and drop off (if from Lousada) in the price, so you do not need to worry about that – and I am happy to take small groups to the local supermarkets etc. You may also consider spending a few nights in either Porto or the capital Lisbon, which is totally different, and well worth a visit, too).

Cost and Payment

Payment is usually by Paypal. PLEASE contact Linda by email or Messenger first to decide on accommodation availability and length of stay etc. If you prefer to pay by bank transfer, please just let me know, this is no problem. I recommend taking out some basic travel insurance to cover last minute complications, accident and health coverage, luggage problems etc.

(please send a covering email, too, with your name and contact details, and naturally we would like to know a little about you! Thanks)

…If you choose to pay in instalments, I will send you a payment reminder when the next instalment is due – I usually divide the time equally with the final payment 28 days before the workshop.

Again, please contact me at linda.janet.chaves@gmail.com with any questions – there are always other payment options which I am more than happy to work out with you. I will always send a confirming email after a payment.
