The Pink Buddha Art Studio
My brand new in-person GLOW workshops will be here at my Pink Buddha Art Studio near the amazing city of Porto in Portugal. I invite you to come and paint in this lovely corner of the world, whether a beginner or a more experienced artist. The group size will be quite small as I like to help people individually as much as possible.
Many people have asked me over the years how I make my paintings appear to glow. I have developed ways over the years to do this, as one of my aims is to give my art a strong presence, and, especially with reference to certain subjects, glow not only visually but sometimes even to give the piece almost a spiritual presence, as in the Buddhas that I paint.
These techniques are not at all difficult, but they do require a bit of practice, like any technique – and the right materials. So in this course I will demonstrate live, taking you gradually through the development of a painting, right from the earliest stages, with lots of extra hints and tips, through to the later stages where the ‘glow’ effect starts to appear, mainly by a combination of the right colours and types of paints, together with blending techniques which are very important to achieve the effects.
My large abstract was painted in the same way – it now glows in the sun on a collector’s wall in Spain!
Every person is totally different with a different style, so over time you will definitely adopt your own colour palettes and ways of blending and applying the paint, which is great. These techniques are suitable for realistic, semi realistic, fantasy and abstract painting, whichever inspires you.
I will demonstrate live in the studio showing you how to create your painting step by step through several layers and in the final stages how to make your art GLOW!
You will see my techniques in action, perhaps with paints new to you, and an introduction to my personal painting style which, of course, I hope you will adapt to your own creative inspiration and ideas. I am a trained career teacher, and will always be present to help, advise and suggest.
I demonstrate throughout by painting a Buddha but you may choose your own subject, best kept fairly simple as you learn the techniques, or paint an abstract if this is your preferred style.
Here is what to expect:-
- Over four full days in the studio, I will demonstrate each step of the journey, from working on the background, mark making, choosing your image, transfer of the image either by eye or I will demonstrate my preferred grid method.
2. Using specific paint combinations and blending techniques, I will demonstrate step by step how to build up your painting over several layers – with the main objective of making your final paintings GLOW and RADIATE so they are a strong and very present image in your home.
3. There will be time during the day, if you wish, to relax a little and enjoy the garden and the pool
Above all, it will also be a wonderful experience of the real Portugal as well as making art that you love, learning new methods, making new friends and perhaps ‘glowing’ ourselves in the spirit of creativity, fun and cooperation.
A DAY IN PORTO
There will also be the option of spending one day exploring the vibrant, historic city of Porto. There is an interesting train ride from Penafiel station which will take you straight to São Bento railway station – one of Porto’s marvels, with amazing tiles. Then you are free to explore the city and I will give you many suggestions of where you might like to visit .
(If you do not wish to go, or have mobility issues, you are welcome to remain and stay at the studio. You will be accompanied.)

The TOTAL PRICE will be:-
$1850 or 1700 euros or the equivalent in the currency of your country.

– Accommodation – bed and breakfast at the Penafiel Park Hotel and Spa in the neighbouring town of Penafiel.
– Airport pick up and drop off (from Penafiel), and daily transport to and from the hotel
– Return train ticket to PORTO if you decide to go, or an extra day in the studio.

- Air fares and journey costs to and from Oporto International Airport

- Lunch and Dinner –
After much thought, I decided that I would like people to be free to eat as and when they wish.
One strategy would be to visit the local supermarkets (an experience in itself!) and stock up individually on your choice of lunch items, which can be kept in the fridge. We can go as often as is necessary. In the evening, there is a restaurant in the hotel, or you may like to stroll up to the lovely town centre of Penafiel, which has a historic centre, churches, a museum and lots of shops for those inclined!
Alternatively, you may prefer to snack in the evening and try out one of the lively, very Portuguese restaurants near the studio. You can decide on the day – flexibility is key!

You may like to stay longer, or arrive earlier, and extend your trip by spending more time in Porto (there are lots of interesting experiences on offer there, too), or travel on to Lisbon or other European destinations.
